Under Water Dogs

I spotted these earlier and found some of them really hilarious whilst some of them were terrifying! Some of them reminded me of some images I saw a while ago of under water tigers! There are loads more of these wonderful dog images by Seth Casteel over on Little Friends Lifestyle Pet Photography.  Pop on over, some of them are guaranteed to make you giggle :)

Yo Momma is a Shitty Designer

I found these hilarious printable notepads earlier this week and had to share them with you! Its a little bit geeky but good fun none the less! They are designed by 55 Hi's (a greetings collective). I found 'Yo momma is so stupid she thinks pantone is a shampoo' particularly funny as well as 'Yo momma is so ugly, her picture broke the clone stamp'. I may have to use a few of these next time the 'Yo momma' banter pops up. The printable file is 8.5x11 without bleed so print away on any standard printer and then just tear the sheet in half. So what are you waiting for? Get it by clicking here!

Inspiration Monday - Spring

1. Three Season's Leaf Hair grips - Sakura Dancer
2. Tiny Green Leaf Necklace - Lulu Bug Jewellery
3. A New Leaf - Shaz Madani
4. Turn Over A New Leaf Notebook - Sukie
5. Spring Flower - Alice Potter
6. Green Striped Straws - Hey Yoyo
7. Feathers Locket - Bonbi Forest

After such a wonderful weekend of lovely sunshine and almost feeling like shorts weather it feels as if Spring is finally here. Although, to be fair we didn't really have much of a winter as the blossom has been on the trees in the next town for quite some time. The same with the daffodils, they have been out for quite a while. The bluebells are on their way out as are the crocus'! Therefore, it was only right that this weeks inspiration post had to be about spring! I found some right beauties this week! For instance the Bonbi Forest locket, ( I actually own this so I maybe a little bias but its lovely!)

Spring and the new year could be seen as a time to 'turn over a new leaf', start a fresh and change a few things. I know I'll be changing a few things and working harder at others. Spending less on clothes is a big one. I have plenty, I don't need anymore. I'll also be dedicating a lot more time to being creative and already have a few ideas in the pipeline. I may even use spring as an inspiration to one of them!

Facebook

I finally have a facebook page for my work! I'm not going to lie, I was really scared about getting one incase no one liked it! So I finally took the plunge and made one. So to keep up to date with my work and help me get rid of the no 'likes' worry why not visit the Joanne Hawker: Design + Illustration page and press like :) Thank you!

Creative Insight - Joanne Hawker

Have you ever seen someones work and wondered 'how did they do that?' Well, I think that all the time when I'm discovering new work. I've always found other peoples working methods interesting too and so the idea for the Creative Insight feature was born! I know some people are a bit wary of giving away how they do things but its nice to share isn't it? You may even pick up a few new tips and tricks or even inspire some new work of your own. Here I have used some of my work as an example so you can see the sort of thing I want to demonstrate. So if you want to get involved and help me get this feature off of the ground please email me! I don't bite I promise :)

Tools of the trade:
* Mechanical Pencil
* Drawing Pens
* Photoshop

1. All of my work begins life as a sketch in my little doodle book and then when it comes to taking it one step further I draw up the same doodle on a single sheet of paper using my mechanical pencil.

2. Once I am happy with my pencil outlines I very carefully draw over them with my drawing pens being very careful not to smudge the ink. Once the ink is dry I rub out any pencil lines that are still visible. Once thats done it gets put on the scanner ready to be scanned and pulled into Photoshop.

3. Once the image has been scanned and pulled into Photoshop I play with the levels to erase the background texture and to make the lines more crisp. At this point I also erase any pencil lines that I missed or any areas that I am not happy with. Once the line work is sorted I start on the fun bit! Colouring in the different areas.

4. Once all the colour has been added I start to experiment with different textures/papers.

5. I keep layering up the textures and playing with background elements until I am happy. I add in a little moon beam and then I think I'm done!

So there you are, a little peak into one of the ways that I like to work. I'll probably be popping it up on Society6 in the coming days so expect to see some more links! There is also the opportunity to place a little bit about you here as well as links to your shop and portfolio if you so wish. So have a little think about it yeah? Thank you! I hope you've enjoyed the small insight into my work :)

Lisa Martin

This is the super lovely work of Lisa Martin. As regulars will know, I love a good animal or even better, a woodland creature! Needless to say I was very happy when I stumbled across the simple yet wonderfully cute work of Lisa especially when I discovered her woodland creatures...

Lisa Martin is a children's illustration currently based in Leeds, West Yorkshire. Originally a Geordie lass she dabbles in children's interior design creating a range of fun and interactive wallpapers and decals. To see the rest of her work give her web site a quick peek.

Inspiration Monday - Nautical

1. Plaice - Lovely Pigeon
2. Nautical Numbers - Area Fare Kids
3. Anchor Necklace - Juju Treasures
4. Marlin Beach Decor - Slippin Southern
5. Navy Sailboat Pillow - Designs By Nancy T
6. Malibu Fish Plates - Houzz

Its Inspiration Monday time, again! This weeks theme is nautical. This is mainly because on the weekend I visited the beautiful Dorset coast and went and stared at many weird and wonderful fish at the sea life center. I absolutely love fish, there are so many pretty ones, scary looking ones, grumpy fish, happy fish and really odd fish. However, my favourite had to be a silly little crab which kept flipping onto its back and getting stuck! Sea life centers and the coast is a haven for inspiration so enjoy!

It fell on the floor... Do you eat it?

The 5 second rule. This is an ongoing debate with my friends and family. Do you eat it or do you bin it? Then I saw this over on design taxi! Its a really funny flow chart on whether you should eat something or not! Usually if it is within my own home I don't mind so much as I know it is clean and there are no pets but if I am outside of my own living space its a definiate no no!

An advert for dogs...

Really? An advert for dogs?! What were these creatives on when they pitched this to Bakers Complete. Yes, it may contain high pitch noises that humans are unable to hear and yes it may gain a reaction from your pet dog BUT does this mean that your dog is going to stroll on down to the local supermarket and demand you buy it Bakers Complete? NO! The only thing this is going to do is create unnecessary barking at the tv every time it comes on. Annoying much? Rant over. What do you think?

Google - Valentines Day

Well as we all know its valentines day today! Or as some people like to call it 'singles awareness day'.
Google has done it again with another little interactive feature on its home page. Its a lovely little animation of a boy googling presents for his valentine but she isn't interested in the material goods. So he starts skipping with her and thats the start of their romance. At the end it shows other good pairings such as the princess and the frog or cookies and milk. Give it a little play today :)

I have wanted to go traveling for years! Ever since I went to China in 6th Form. After a really rubbish week at work I had some great news! My friend Leanne had booked our tickets to New Zealand and my traveling dreams had become reality! Its only for 3 weeks but I'm so excited! As you may have read in a previous post I am also going skiing in March for the first time! So after not going anywhere for years it has suddenly all appeared in the space of 2 months. It really brightened up my week so now I have to write lists, organise stuff, buy luggage, sort visa's etc! Therefore as part of my excitement this weeks inspiration post had to be about traveling! :)

Children + 1000's of stickers = Incredible Installation

Wow! This is what happens when you create an entirely brilliant white room, add children and hundreds of thousands of stickers. This incredible interactive installation was the creation of Yayoi Kusama for the Queensland Gallery of Modern Art as part of the Look Now, See Forever exhibition. The first two images are courtesy Queensland Art Gallery and photographer Mark Sherwood. Additional images from Stuart Addelsee and heybubbles.

Lizzy Stewart

This is the wonderful work of Lizzy Stewart. Lizzy Stewart is an illustrator, based in London, who graduated from Edinburgh College of Art in 2009. Her work is inspired, primarily, by a need to tell stories but also by folk culture, music and the places in which she finds herself. She is one half of independent publishers Sing Statistics who make nice books for nice people.

Did you know that she also has a very lovely etsy shop? You can see and buy even more of her pretty work over there :)

Roald Dahl Stamps

Today the Royal Mail has released new sets of collectable stamps to celebrate the work of Roald Dahl. Each stamp features work from long time friend and collaborator Quentin Blake! I'm not usually fussed about this kind of thing but these stamps are beautiful and remind me of many childhood stories.

The Guardian:
Quentin Blake's famous illustrations of The Twits, Matilda and Fantastic Mr Fox all feature on a new series of stamps from the Royal Mail, issued to celebrate the work of Roald Dahl.

 ...The stamps also show James and the Giant Peach and The Witches, while a triumphant Charlie Bucket from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is brandishing a golden ticket on the new first class stamp. Meanwhile, the 30th anniversary of Dahl's classic children's novel The BFG is marked this year with a sheet of four stamps showing scenes from the Big Friendly Giant, as well as an illustration depicting the meeting between the giant and the Queen, and a quote from the children's novel: "'Your Majester,' he said. 'I is your humbug servant.' He bowed again."

To get more information on the different stamp sets available or even to purchase them have a look over on the Royal Mail web site.

Place's on Earth

This is a Place's on Earth Print created exclusively for The Royal We by Oliver Jeffers. It is a signed hand drawn screen print of a map of the world and it is absolutely lovely! I'd really really really LOVE one of these to put on my wall above my desk but unfortunately I'm supposed to be saving for a holiday so I can't! The map comes with 202 pins to chart your path to global domination! There is a red one to mark your headquarters and a blue one to show your next target. It would also make a great visual to show where you have been in the world! It is also available in black. If you'd like to buy one of these beauties pop on over to the You And Me The Royal We shop :)
